HILLARY Clinton is still the favourite to win the US election despite losing ground in recent opinion polls.
But if Clinton triumphs next week, she will struggle to govern in the wake of such a relentlessly bruising election campaign.
Thomas Scotto, Professor of Government at the University of Strathclyde, describes the Democrat as a “conventional candidate” with a wealth of experience.
But Prof Scotto said: “She would be coming into office as one of the most unpopular candidates in the history of the country.
“The question is, will she be given what is called a honeymoon period or will the non-stop attacks continue?
“There’s a lot of questions hanging over her now that the Republicans will make hay over.”
The Clinton email scandal is sure to rumble on, or even deepen, after the revelation that the FBI has found more of her emails.
The FBI is examining the new emails which may be relevant to its investigation into her use of a private server while Secretary of State.
Donald Trump has declared: “Her election would mire our government and our country in a constitutional crisis that we cannot afford.”
The Republican is unlikely to concede gracefully and is already making claims that the UE elections are rigged against him.

Despite the ongoing political turmoil in America, Prof Scotto said that the financial markets will welcome the election of Clinton.
He said: “Markets will calm and breathe a sigh of relief. Businesses know what they are getting. There will be an ordered process of governance.”

Prof Scotto believes that Clinton will continue Barack Obama’s legacy but will not be able to make radical policy changes.
The US expert said: “I don’t think she is going to have the mandate to that because of her low popularity.”
He noted that Republicans, particularly tea party activists, will do “everything they can” to stop her governing.

Mrs Clinton will maintain the “status quo” in relation to America’s intervention in Syria, according to Prof Scotto.
He said: “Many see her as a foreign policy hawk but she has been burnt once for her support of the Iraq War.”
